Jazz

For my next style of music I will be looking at Jazz. Its music comes from a black African origin which emerged at the Beginning of the 20th century. Usually performed using instruments such as woodwind, brass, piano, guitar and sometimes the violin. It is characterized by improvisation, syncopation and is lead with a forceful rhythm. To sing Jazz you do not necessarily need to have a wide vocal range making it good for first time singers, it is more about exploring your voice.
"The best way to begin is by immersing yourself in the music of the great singers. Some of the best females include Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter and Peggy Lee"(The Guardian, 2009 )

From research I have looked at rhythmic displacement, which is something commonly used in Jazz. Firstly once you find a song you'd like to sing you should 'loosen up' the timing of each fraise, to sing the words as if  you were saying them. This will change the rhythm of the song and can allow you to emphasis on words and give your cover individuality. also lengthening notes and singing slightly against the music will also enable you to sound more like a Jazz singer. "To practise rhythmic displacement, it is a good idea to begin by learning a simple ballad, such as Embraceable You by George and Ira Gershwin. Having memorised the song, start subtly "loosening up." the timing of each phrase. The idea here is to sing the words rather like you might say them" (The Guardian, 2009)
